Tech Add-it
There exists a term, digital addict. This means someone who is obsessively using technology, absorbing their entire attention and can become withdrawn or act out if they cannot use that technology.
The majority of young people nowadays have a Facebook account. Due to the Cambridge Analytica scandal, calls are being made for users to close their accounts. With Facebook, much of young adults and even adults, socialise online through the platform. It is increasingly becoming more natural for persons to interact with others online than offline. This is worrying trend as the impact on their physical and mental well-being can be detrimental.
Another tech addiction scenario is in schools.
Contrary to mainstream opinion, the impact of computers on student performance
was at best, mixed. This is according to a report done by the OECD in 2015. As
such, it is not the magic silver bullet to increase student performance.
A study by Canada noted e-learning in
universities discovered that students desired real-life lessons with a
physically present lecturer. Yet, we often hear of students using it to play
games and watch movies. While having access to a computer is empowering, we
must be mindful of the dangers associated with it. See my posts here and here.
Having said all that, a tech addiction is like
any other addiction. The use of technology rewards the user, which is what they
become “hooked” on. Most important to note, is that technology
does improved lives and empower persons. As stated by MIT sociologist Sherry
Turkle, "To combat addiction, you have to discard the addicting
substance". However, technology is with us and increasing we rely on it in
our daily lives, whether to call family and friends or find our way to a
foreign destination. Thus, healthy use of technology should be
encouraged.
Next time you're tempted to check your phone:It’s not people with phones versus people without. It’s how you use the phones that matter.
- Stop.
- Take a deep breathe.
- Reassure yourself: You can be calm without your phone.
- Take in the world around you (sights, sounds)
- Check your phone when the temptation passed
How do you manage yourself from becoming addicted to technology. Let us know your tips below.
You may call it addicted but I know some young persons who calls it living. Apparently that's how its done in today's world.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad I escape that generation. I prefer using my PC. My cell is for BBC news, youtube and light gaming, you can also read pdf files on the S4 so e-books ahoy.
ReplyDeleteYes, its what young people call living, however it doesn't mean its ok to continue or fall into that category. To stop yourself from becoming a tech junkie you can set aside one day every month to leave all technology behind. Another useful tip is to spend time outdoors, either exercising, hiking, sports, or just relaxing at the beach.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the tips, sakura.
